Raising the Bar for Sustainability in Design Standards + Guidelines

Bainbridge Island attracts residents with a commitment to sustainability and a love of the island’s character. The City’s Design Guidelines needed an update to promote sustainable design and development, and engaged Framework to lead the development of new design standards and guidelines, called Design for Bainbridge. Framework and the City worked together to integrate sustainability goals throughout the document and ensure new development is compatible with City’s and community’s long-term vision. Jeff Arango and Lesley Bain led extensive engagement with the community, boards and commissions, and focus groups to understand challenges with the City’s current design review process.

The new design guidelines document define design standards and guidelines, requirements for context analysis, street and frontage types that guide how new development should interact with the street, and supplemental guidelines for special conditions. Design for Bainbridge was adopted by the City in September 2019. Framework will continue working with City staff to create a web-based version of the document and manual for the design process.
