coordinated streetscape plans for seattle’s historic pioneer square neighborhood

Pioneer Square’s streets changing to accommodate neighborhood changes and new options for mobility. A combination of development and transportation projects have given Pioneer Square the opportunity to improve and coordinate much needed infrastructure in the streets, sidewalks and alleys.

The Alliance for Pioneer Square contracted with Framework to provide research and design services for a series of Street Concept Plans. The intent of the work is to look holistically at the Pioneer Square neighborhood, understand the optimal functionality and character of the streets from the neighborhood standpoint, incorporate public input, and coordinate with agencies, Pioneer Square Preservation Board, residents, businesses and property owners. This project started with a research and inventory phase that included an in-depth review of numerous plans and projects in Pioneer Square, spanning future planning efforts to near term construction projects. The team coordinated a research effort with University of Washington Geography students, inventorying streetscape elements including physical components and social activity hotspots.
