McGraw Square first opened in 1913 in downtown Seattle. The city has grown around it, and in 2011, a partial street closure allowed space for the South Lake Union streetcar. By 2018 there was a strong need for more well-located usable public space, and the Downtown Seattle Association, in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation, asked Framework and DCI to design enhancements to space.

Seattle’s rain and the rain gardens already on site were the inspiration for the design. Unique raindrop-styled swivel seats, wave benches and cloud seats joined the rain gardens. Downtown Seattle Association helps to activate the square by bringing in food trucks, games and their Ambassadors.
