A Quality Setting for Seattle Center Theaters

Theater Commons transformed a 1.6  acre parking lot into a green, inviting entry to Seattle Center. This project was the culmination of years of planning work, starting with the Theater District Master Plan, which called for a design that would create a distinctive home to the region’s premier performing arts venues along the north edge of Seattle Center. Theater Commons links the space between the Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Cornish Playhouse.
The design team worked with Seattle Repertory Theatre and Seattle Center. The architectural portion of the project focused on the addition of an expansive canopy to the existing Seattle Repertory Theatre. The canopy and the red wall at its edge were intended to increase visibility of the theater, shelter patrons entering from the street, draw on the “Planes of Light” ideas laid out in the master plan, and add vibrancy to the Theatre District at night.
